Under the continuous signup option of the Conservation Reserve Program, landowners and operators may enroll eligible cropland into a buffer practice for 10 to 15 years. Annual rental payments are made to the participant based upon the soil types present in the field and can range from $34 to $66 per acre per contract year. There are person and land eligibility requirements that must be met. To be eligible, cropland must be suitably located and adaptable to establishing buffer practices. There must be a crop history for 4 years during the time span 1996 thru 2001. Individual or entity eligibility deals with compliance with the highly erodible land, wetland conversion and adjusted gross income program requirements. Perhaps the best way to address both individual and land eligibility issues is to visit with your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. Contacts: Allen County 620-365-2901 Ext. 2 ask for Marthena. Bourbon County 620-223-1880 Ext 2 ask for Lesa.

If your farm has a river, creek, or small stream, the land adjacent to these may be eligible for certain practices in the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CCRP). Practices that are included are Filter Strips (CP-21), Riparian Forest Buffers (CP-22), Grassed Waterways (CP-8), Quail Buffers (CP-33), SAFE Buffers (CP-38) and Shallow Water Areas For Wildlife (CP-9). FSA makes an annual rental payment for the land enrolled in CCRP and provides cost-share assistance in an amount equal to 50% of the participants cost in establishing approved practices. The duration of contracts are from 10 to 15 years. The program allows you to enroll your eligible land in CRP at any time with out having to submit a competitive offer. The field must have four years of crop history out of the years (1996-2001) and be owned by the current owner for at least one year.
