This year the day took place at a farm north of town, with stations that ranged from using a level to range management.  The day was a great success, with beautiful weather and eager kids.

 

 

 

Take-homes for the students

Each student was given two books, a ruler, and a pencil from the district.

The World is an Apple

Carla Nemecek uses an apple to demonstrate what the earth is made up of. The best part, the kids were able to eat the apple at the end!

Using a Level

At this station, the kids learn the difference between a laser and optical level, and what NRCS uses them for.

Streambank Trailer

Matt Powe, NRCS District Conservationist, deomonstrates erosion with the streambank trailer. The kids are seeing first hnad how a stream wears away the banks of a stream.

The lay of the land

The host location for the event has pleanty of space to spread out and let the kids move around.

Runoff Demonstration

Denise Mentzer explains how different covers on the soil help to reduce runoff.

Hawk vs. Quail

Kansas Wildlife and Parks plays a game with the kids to deomonstrate predator and pray on the prarie.

Running Free

The kids like this station because they are able to run around and they get candy as a reward.

What can be found in our parks?

Don George, a biologist with Kansas Wildlife and Parks, shows the kids some of the different animals and shells that can be found in Kansas lakes.

Soil Scientist

Don Gastineau with NRCS shows the kids different layers that can be found in the soil.

Range Management

Here the kids are learninga about grasses and rangeland conditions.

Farm Bureau Water Station

The Allen County Farm Bureau brought out a hand washing and drinking station for the kids to use. It was hot that day, so the kids really appreciated the drink.
